Overview
High Royds Hospital, a historic landmark in West Yorkshire, is renowned for its striking Victorian architecture and long-standing heritage. Originally opened in 1888 as a psychiatric institution, the site closed in 2003 and has since been repurposed into a residential development. Given the scale and complexity of the structure, a comprehensive roof inspection was essential to assess its condition and ensure ongoing preservation efforts.
The Challenge
The hospital’s vast and intricate roof structure presented unique challenges, including difficult access points, delicate heritage features, and the need for a non-intrusive inspection method. Traditional manual inspections would have been time-consuming, costly, and posed potential safety risks. The client required a detailed condition report to identify any maintenance needs while ensuring minimal disruption to residents and the surrounding area.
The Solution
Utilising advanced drone technology, we conducted a full aerial survey of the roof, capturing high-resolution imagery and video footage. This approach allowed us to inspect every aspect of the structure efficiently, including areas that would have been otherwise inaccessible. The data was then meticulously analysed, and a 102-page Chartered Surveyor Roof Condition Report was produced, outlining key findings, recommendations, and necessary maintenance actions.
